Music and food, c'est la vie

Posted on Jun 28, 2010

June 21st: Summer solstice, my little sister's birthday, and...fête de la musique!

Fête de la musique is an international holiday celebrating music that I was never aware of until just a few days ago. All over Paris there were bands, artists, DJ's, etc performing in the streets or in cafes until late into the night. Some areas were crazy, like Saint-Michel, where you had to push your way through mobs of drunk teens and pounding music. Other areas were much more mellow, with people sitting in parks or on the terrace of a cafe listening to a band or classical musicMus. It was a fun, truly unique, and "only in Paris" kind of experience and I'm so glad that I got to be in Paris for it!

On Wednesday we got to meet Jim Key, the director of marketing at Intrax. Jim led us through a very brief yet extremely helpful session on the basics of networking and how to develop a good elevator pitch. In other words, say you happened to be standing in an elevator with the CEO of a company that you really wanted to work for. In 30 seconds or less, what would you tell the CEO about yourself? That's an elevator pitch and we each had to get up and say ours to the group. Perfecting your elevator pitch is harder than it sounds, but definitely worth doing.

It's the second week into my internship and things are going good, I'm slowly being given more responsibility which is awesome. Since several of M&C Saatchi's clients are global, I've been helping out with some writing, editing and translating of web copy in English. I love to write so it's fun. The other fun part about my job is of course the lunch break. Having at least a full hour for lunch is the standard and everyone respects your time. There are so many great cafes and brasseries around where I work and I love walking around with the other interns and finding our new favorite places. It also helps that M&C Saatchi has provides us interns with the "cheque dejeuner", which are lunch vouchers worth 8 euros and pretty much the best thing ever. The weather has finally warmed up in Paris so on Thursday Stevie and I joined some of the French interns for a picnic at Palais Royal.

The interns and I at Palais Royal during our lunch break.

A delicious salad from one of my favorite cafés.

Finally made it to the Eiffel Tower! Check out that full moon....

Until next time! :)
